About

🕍 A Church with Heart and History

Founded on 15 August 1864 by the Rev. Arthur Douglas Wagner, The Annunciation was built to serve the growing working-class community of Hanover . Designed by local surveyor William Dancy in the Gothic Revival style, it opened as a chapel of ease and quickly became a spiritual home to many .

When its popularity outgrew the original layout, architect Edmund Scott added a north aisle and tower by 1892, again with funding from Wagner . Today, it’s recognised as a Grade II listed building since 20 September 1996 .

💒 A Home for Everyone

Nestled on Brighton’s iconic “Muesli Mountain,” in Hanover the church warmly describes itself as “a home from home.” It embraces diversity and inclusivity while celebrating its rich Anglo‑Catholic heritage—complete with incense, beautiful music, and joyful fellowship . Whether you’re seeking a solemn High Mass, a peaceful communion, or a lively community barbecue, The Annunciation fosters life lived to the full .

🌍 Serving the Community

As the parish church for the Hanover area—and welcoming members from across Brighton, Hove, Portslade, and Woodingdean—the church is grounded in Christian mission and local engagement.

🎨 Sanctuary of Beauty

A modest exterior hides a richly adorned interior. Within, you’ll find striking stained glass by Edward Burne‑Jones and Mosaic elements, alongside fixtures typical of Wagner’s ritualist influence  .
